Portage County Jail Overview

Portage County Jail is operated by the Portage County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division. The jail is part of the Law Enforcement Center in Stevens Point and serves as the county's adult detention center for people booked after arrest, adults held before court or bond review, locally sentenced jail inmates, and people approved for Huber work or school release. Portage County Jail Capacity and Population

Capacity is a major local issue for Portage County Jail. The Sheriff's 2023 annual report lists the current rated capacity at 79 inmates and says the jail was consistently over that rated capacity. The FY 2026 public safety budget reports an average daily in-jail population of 84 in 2023, 96 in 2024, and 90 as of June 30, 2025. Those figures do not fully capture the county's pressure, because the same budget material reports out-of-county average daily population of 35 in 2023, 39 in 2024, and 39 as of June 30, 2025.

Portage County is planning a replacement Jail and Law Enforcement Center with 196 beds. The county building project page says Wisconsin DOC recommends operating jails at no more than 80 percent of capacity so classification remains workable, which would put the planned facility's practical operating level at about 156 inmates. How to Look Up an Inmate at Portage County Jail

Portage County does not publish a county-hosted live jail roster with public booking profiles in the official sources reviewed. The practical search is a channel sweep. Start with Wisconsin VINELink for jail custody status, then call Portage County Jail at 715-346-1259 if VINE has no match, a name spelling is uncertain, or a same-day release or transfer may have occurred. The sheriff non-emergency number, 715-346-1400, is another local contact path when the specific jail line is not enough.

1. Open Wisconsin VINELink and search the Wisconsin jail-custody channel by the person's legal name or available identifier.
2. If the result is unclear, call Portage County Jail and ask whether the person is currently held, recently released, or housed out of county for overflow.
3. Use Wisconsin Circuit Court Access for filed court charges, case numbers, hearings, and bond conditions after a prosecutor files a case.

Portage County Jail uses Reliance video visitation for personal visits. The county says face-to-face personal visits are no longer conducted. Friends and family may use remote video visitation through Reliance, and the jail also has two onsite video booths. Each inmate is allowed one free onsite visit per week, subject to jail safety, security, and operational limits. Non-attorney personal visits are recorded and monitored, and visits can be denied, canceled, or stopped for misconduct, prohibited clothing, inappropriate images, no-contact orders, or facility needs.

As of April 1, 2026, Portage County says the jail no longer accepts physical inmate mail at the jail except privileged attorney-client mail. Reliance scans acceptable mail for electronic delivery, and originals are destroyed except funds. Mail must include the sender and recipient information, a valid postmark, and content that meets the jail's security rules.

Portage County Jail uses Reliance Telephone Systems for phone calls, text messaging, video visitation, voicemail, and inmate phone wallet services. Jail officers do not deliver civilian messages unless the message is a genuine emergency. Calls and messages are recorded and monitored unless a protected attorney communication is properly registered and handled through the approved process.

The county money page lists a $3 cash fee at the Stellar Teller machine and a 10 percent credit-card fee for Mastercard or Visa deposits. Online inmate-account deposits use JailATM. Sentenced inmates may be charged a $22 daily jail fee, and account funds can also pay medical costs, medication charges, canteen, and existing jail debt. If an account is negative, the county says 50 percent of later funds may be applied to jail debts.

Booking and Intake at Portage County Jail

After an adult arrest in Portage County, deputies or another law enforcement agency may transport the person to the Law Enforcement Center for jail intake.
